South Korea Signs Nuclear Deal With UAE

South Korea Signs Nuclear Deal With UAE
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

A deal signed yesterday would open the door for the United Arab Emirates to import nuclear technology from South Korea, Reuters reported (see GSN, May 22).

The deal "stipulates that the government of South Korea would help the UAE in building its peaceful nuclear program ... over 20 years." Abu Dhabi has signed similar deals with France and the United States as it prepares to establish a nuclear energy program encompassing multiple reactors.

A number of Middle Eastern nations have indicated their intent to develop nuclear energy. Western nations have expressed hope that the UAE program might serve as an example of a nation pursuing a successful nuclear program without posing a proliferation threat (Reuters, June 22).
