Fr. Warren's Week Reflection: A Parable of 10 Virgins

page.
Clouds
THIS WEEK'S REFLECTION from Fr. Bob Warren, SA
A Parable of the Ten Virgins
There is no doubt about it, the first Christians fully expected Jesus to return soon. But they were disappointed as days, weeks, months and years went by, and Jesus was a no-show. Some began to wonder if Jesus was coming back at all.
Matthew's gospel was an answer to this dilemma. It is aimed at those who are losing heart, losing faith, and giving up. He offers a parable from Jesus that basically warns his followers to be always ready, no matter what the schedule. The Lord, like the bridegroom, will indeed come, but He will come when we least expect Him. So do not be foolish, be prepared.
Christians have been prepared for 2,000 years now. Even with a no‑show and a weaker sense of urgency than the early Christians, we still recite every Sunday a creed that proclaims He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
And there are people in every century who say they know exactly when Jesus is coming. Even today the latest warnings and timetables are to be found in a best seller, the "Left Behind" series. They are full of eccentric, false and misleading readings of scripture.
Far out as they are, they are very popular. Maybe because our world is in such a mess that some just yearn for Christ to come and put an end to it all. But we are stuck with the meanwhile: Until Christ comes, what do we do? How do we live?
Matthew gives us an answer in today's gospel. He offers us two themes: be prepared, be recognized.
First, be prepared. Not only for the visitation of Jesus in judgement and death, but also for His visitation in life. Jesus is already here!
The inspiration to help those in need, the out of the blue sense that we should pray, the time we ask ourselves, is that all there is? Should I be doing something different with my life? Or the sudden impulse to do good, to be more noble, less selfish.
Then there is the more insistent attention‑getters: the death of a loved one, the onslaught of an illness. Or looking in the mirror and seeing an old person looking back. Or seeing the awesomeness of nature. The falling asleep child in your arms, your first child or grandchild.
All these common occurrences are inspirations of the Holy Spirit. These, my friends, are visits from Jesus. He comes to us in the now. If only we would stay awake, recognize and embrace these times, when the groom arrives, we would be prepared, no matter when the final visit.
The second lesson in Matthew's gospel is to live in such a way as to be recognized by Jesus. And we are recognized by Christ not by our card-carrying memberships, but by our faith and good works.
Remember in the story when the foolish virgins ask the five wise ones to share some of their oil, and the five reply no way. That might sound selfish, but the fact is that the oil stands for faith and good works, and these are not transferrable.
You cannot borrow the oil of faith. You cannot borrow another's good works. You must respond to God's call yourself.
Yes, Christ will come to judge the living and the dead, but no one knows the day or the hours. I suggest that we live as if Christ is coming today, not in fear and trembling, but in the realization that the Christ who is coming is already here in so many ways.
He is in those around you, here and at home. He touches you in the hungry you nourish, in the stranger you welcome. In the sick you take time to console, or the child you encourage. When you touch them, you touch Christ, and so when He does come He will recognize you because you will not be a stranger to Him.
So stop worrying about the end of times, when Christ will come. He is coming to you today as you come up and receive Him. And if you are looking for Him, He is seated all around you.
Fr. Robert Warren, S.A.
Yours in Christ,

France: Muslims In, Jews Out

France: Muslims In, Jews Out

by Giulio Meotti  •  November 15, 2017 at 5:00 am
  • Suburbs have become transformed into one of the most visible signs of the Islamization of France. Anti-Semitism is devouring the French Republic.
  • While Jewish symbols disappear from France, Islamic symbols proliferate, from burkinis on the beaches to veils in the workplace. Jews who have not fled France are trying to become "invisible".
  • France's suburbs are rapidly becoming apartheid societies. Hatred of Jews has become the gateway to "la France soumise" -- the submission of France.
Pictured: French soldiers guard a Jewish school in Paris. (Photo by Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images)
Suburbs ("banlieues") -- distant from the affluent boulevards and bistros of Paris -- form the "other France". They are the "peripheral France", ("La France Périphérique") as the geographer Christophe Guilluy calls them in an important book. They are where "living together" between communities has really been tested.
In the last 20 years, these French suburbs have not only become "concentrations of poverty and social isolation", but have gone from being some of France's most densely-populated Jewish areas to "lost territories of the Republic", according to the great historian Georges Bensoussan, in his book, Les territoires perdus de la République.
These suburbs have become transformed into one of the most visible signs of the Islamization of France.

Massive Overkill Brought to You By the Nuclear-Industrial Complex

Massive Overkill
Brought to You By the Nuclear-Industrial Complex
By William D. Hartung
[This piece has been updated and adapted from William D. Hartung’s “Nuclear Politics” in Sleepwalking to Armageddon: The Threat of Nuclear Annihilation, edited by Helen Caldicott and just published by the New Press.]
Until recently, few of us woke up worrying about the threat of nuclear war. Such dangers seemed like Cold War relics, associated with outmoded practices like building fallout shelters and “duck and cover” drills.
But give Donald Trump credit.  When it comes to nukes, he’s gotten our attention. He’s prompted renewed concern, if not outright alarm, about the possibility that such weaponry could actually be used for the first time since the 6th and 9th of August 1945. That’s what happens when the man in the Oval Office begins threatening to rain “fire and fury like the world has never seen” on another country or, as he did in his presidential campaign, claiming cryptically that, when it comes to nuclear weapons, “the devastation is very important to me.”

The Real Victims of "Islamophobia"

The Real Victims of "Islamophobia"

by Judith Bergman  •  November 14, 2017 at 5:00 am
  • Local authorities, police, teachers and MPs have all been working with MEND even though the organization "meets the government's own definition of extremism" and "has regularly hosted illiberal, intolerant and extremist Islamist speakers... has openly sought to undermine counter-terrorism legislation and counter-extremism efforts, in addition to having its own links to extremists..."
  • Despite meeting the government's definition of an extremist group, MEND is nevertheless organizing a number of events for "Islamophobia Awareness Month" at British universities.
  • One can think of other issues that are more deserving of an "awareness month" in the UK, especially because many of the people affected by those issues have suffered the consequences of the British obsession with "Islamophobia".
British police and social workers criminally turned their backs on thousands of girls, who were groomed and raped "on an industrial scale" by Muslim rape gangs, especially in the city of Rotherham (pictured). Photo by Anthony Devlin/Getty Images.
In Britain, Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, along with Liberal Democrats leader Vince Cable, are the poster boys for this year's "Islamophobia Awareness Month" a yearly campaign, which has been running under the leadership of Islamist group Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND), since 2012.
"We have to drive out racism in any form in our society," said Corbyn – whose own Labour party has never been more anti-Semitic and who considers Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists his "friends". The message came wrapped in a propaganda video he stars in for the campaign. "Islamophobia," he continued, "is a terrible thing, causes terrible hurt and terrible pain".
"I greatly welcome the contribution that MEND is making to raise awareness of this issue and mobilise people in the political world and elsewhere to fight Islamophobia", Cable adds in the video.

The U.S. Middle East Peace Plan?

The U.S. Middle East Peace Plan?

The U.S. Middle East Peace Plan?

by Bassam Tawil  •  November 13, 2017 at 5:00 am
  • No
American or European on the face of this earth could force a
Palestinian leader to sign a peace treaty with Israel that would be
rejected by an overwhelming majority of his people.
  • Trump's
"ultimate solution" may result in some Arab countries signing peace
treaties with Israel. These countries anyway have no real conflict with
Israel. Why should there not be peace between Israel and Kuwait? Why
should there not be peace between Israel and Oman? Do any of the Arab
countries have a territorial dispute with Israel? The only "problem" the
Arab countries have with Israel is the one concerning the Palestinians.
  • The
question remains: how will the Saudis and the rest of the international
community respond to ongoing Palestinian rejectionism and
    intransigence?

Last
week, the Saudis unexpectedly summoned Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas to Riyadh for talks on Trump's "ultimate solution" for the
Israeli-Arab conflict. Abbas was reportedly told that he had no choice
but to accept the plan or resign. Pictured: Abbas on a previous visit to
Saudi Arabia, on February 23, 2015, meeting with Saudi King Salman.
(Photo by Thaer Ghanaim/PPO via Getty Images)
Who said that Palestinians have no respect for Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Arab countries? They do.
Palestinians
have respect for the money of their Arab brethren. The respect they
lack is for the heads of the Arab states, and the regimes and royal
families there.
It is important
to take this into consideration in light of the growing talk about
Saudi Arabia's effort to help the Trump Administration market a
comprehensive peace plan for the Middle East, the details of which
remain beguilingly mysterious.
Last
week, the Saudis unexpectedly summoned Palestinian Authority (PA)
President Mahmoud Abbas to Riyadh for talks on Trump's "ultimate
solution" for the Israeli-Arab conflict, reportedly being promoted by
Jared Kushner. https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11353/middle-east-peace-plan

  • Article 57 of the French Civil Code states that the name chosen by parents must be in "the best interests of the child." If the public prosecutor thinks the name "Jihad" is contrary to the law, he can ask a judge to order the name to be changed. If the parents are unable or unwilling to choose a new name, the judge has the right to choose a name.
  • Of the 1,900 French jihadists fighting with the Islamic State, as many as one-fifth have received as much as €500,000 ($580,000) in social welfare payments from the French state, according to Le Figaro.
  • Henda Ayari, in an interview with Le Parisien, gave detailed public testimony accusing Tariq Ramadan of sexually assaulting her in Paris. She said that Ramadan believes that "either you wear a veil or you get raped."
France recently announced that it will maintain border checks with its European neighbors until April 30, 2018, because of "persistent" terror threats. France resumed passport checks and other protective measures on borders after the November 2015 jihadist attacks in Paris. October 1. A 29-year-old illegal immigrant from Tunisia stabbed two women to death at the central train station in Marseille. Witnesses heard the assailant shout "Allahu Akbar" as he lunged at the women with a 20-centimetre (eight-inch) knife before threatening soldiers, who shot him dead. The man, identified as Ahmed Hanachi, was using seven different identities and had a long criminal history. He had been arrested in Lyon for shoplifting just days before the attack, but those charges were dropped due to a lack evidence. He was released, despite not having the documents needed to live in France. Why he was never deported remains unclear.

The longstanding cooperation between the two regimes seems to have intensified during Syria’s war, with troubling implications for future missile, chemical, and even nuclear proliferation in the Middle East. North Korea’s decades-old military alliance with the Assad regime is stoking fears inside the Trump administration that Kim Jong-un is not only profiting from Syria’s six-year

"Allahu Akbar": Islamic Battle Cry

"Allahu Akbar": Islamic Battle Cry

by A. Z. Mohamed  •  November 9, 2017 at 4:00 am
  • What the phrase "Allahu Akbar" actually means is that "Allah is greater" than any other god. When recited, it empowers Muslims, making them feel superior to the rest of mankind. "Allahu Akbar" has, in fact, been a jihadist tool since the early years of Islam.
  • Muslims do use it in various benign situations, as well. When it is shouted publicly as an expression of rage, however, particularly during an attack on others, it is intended to intimidate or threaten; its purpose is to emphasize that the assault is being committed on behalf of Allah -- submitting to his command to kill enemies -- and in the expectation of the reward of eternal paradise.
  • When mainstream media outlets in the West whitewash a key tenet of Islam -- jihad in the name of Allah -- these "fellow travelers" are both enabling the problem and obstructing its solution.
Sayfullo Saipov shouted the Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar" when he exited the truck with which he murdered eight people and wounded more than a dozen others, during his October 31 terrorist attack in Manhattan. (Image source: Gh9449/Wikimedia Commons)
Within hours of the recent ISIS-inspired truck-ramming attack in lower Manhattan -- which left eight innocent people dead and more than a dozen others wounded -- much of the media began to divert attention away from the plight of the victims and focus instead on defending Islam. A common thread in the coverage of the mass murder was an accompanying analysis of the Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar," which the terrorist, Sayfullo Saipov, shouted when he exited his vehicle and continued his rampage on foot.
The New York Times, for example, prefaced the tweet of an article about the use of the phrase, by saying: "'Allahu akbar' has somehow become inextricably intertwined with terrorism. Its real meaning is far more innocent."
The Times, like Shariah law apologist and Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour, played down the definition of "Allahu Akbar," by insisting that it simply means is "God is great." https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11326/allahu-akbar
