Clinical profile of bloodstream infections in COVID-19 patients: a retrospective cohort study | BMC Infectious Diseases | Full Text: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are an emerging cause of significant morbidity and mortality in severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to assess the prevalence, clinical profile and outcome of BSIs in critically ill COVID-19 patients. This was a single-centre retrospective study conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Western India. All patients (age > 18 years) with reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed COVID-19 admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) were included. Hospital electronic records were searched for demographic data, time of bloodstream infection since admission, clinical profile, antimicrobial resistance pattern and clinical outcome of all patients who developed BSIs. Out of 750 patients admitted in COVID ICU, 8.5% developed secondary BSIs. All severe COVID-19 patients who developed BSIs succumbed to illness. A significant proportion of BSIs were Gram-negative pathogens (53/64, 82.8%). Acinetobacter baumannii was the commonest isolate, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (32.8% and 21.9%, respectively). Multidrug-resistance organisms (MDRO) were found in 57.8% of the cases. The majority of MDRO belonged to K. pneumoniae and En

Fauci was ‘up to his neck’ funding coronavirus research in Wuhan | Sky News Australia

Fauci was ‘up to his neck’ funding coronavirus research in Wuhan | Sky News Australia: Dr Anthony Fauci was “up to his neck” funding coronavirus research in Wuhan, which “just shows how incredibly stupid” he is, says Sky News host Sharri Markson. Ms Markson has been investigating Anthony Fauci’s involvement in funding the Wuhan Institute of Virology and discovered his agency “had funded 60 projects at the Wuhan laboratory”. “Then he wrote a paper where he said gain of function research was worth the risk of a pandemic, and that he had even funded coronavirus research in conjunction with the Chinese military,” Ms Markson said. Mr Fauci, who has been the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, apparently stayed silent during Oval Office meetings at the start of the pandemic about the “risky research that was underway at the Wuhan Institute of Virology”. “He never mentioned that his agency was funding this, and he actually knew a whole lot about it.” Sharri Markson explores this in a documentary premiering on Monday night, ‘What Really Happened in Wuhan’, including exclusive interviews with former US President Donald Trump and Mike Pompeo. Watch at 8pm Monday on Sky News Australia.

Antibodies from original strain COVID-19 infection don't bind to variants

Antibodies from original strain COVID-19 infection don't bind to variants: People infected with the original strain of the virus that causes COVID-19 early in the pandemic produced a consistent antibody response, making two main groups of antibodies to bind to the spike protein on the virus's outer surface. However, those antibodies don't bind well to newer variants, a new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found.

Coverups surrounding the Wuhan Institute of Virology are ‘extraordinary’ | Sky News Australia

Coverups surrounding the Wuhan Institute of Virology are ‘extraordinary’ | Sky News Australia: Sky News host Sharri Markson says the coverups she discovered while investigating the possibility COVID-19 leaked out of the Wuhan Institute of Virology were “extraordinary”. Ms Markson began her investigations in March last year and said it became very clear there was a real possibility the virus started in the Wuhan lab. “The more I kept digging into it, the story just started unravelling and the coverups were extraordinary,” she said. “The scientific journals who refused to publish the papers from people like Nikolai Petrovsky in Australia, other scientists as well that questioned a natural origin. “Then you had the media censorship as well. They were claiming this was a conspiracy. The tech giants censored it. “And even as I investigated this more I discovered that even people in the state department, in [Mike] Pompeo’s own department who were looking at whether the lab leak was possible, met resistance from the intelligence agencies.” Ms Markson’s documentary 'What Really Happened in Wuhan' will air on Monday at 8pm on Sky News Australia.
