[Essay] The Old Normal, by Andrew J. Bacevich | Harper's Magazine

[Essay] The Old Normal, by Andrew J. Bacevich | Harper's Magazine: Addressing the graduating cadets at West Point in May 1942, General George C. Marshall, then the Army chief of staff, reduced the nation’s purpose in the global war it had recently joined to a single emphatic sentence. “We are determined,” he remarked, “that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle, our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.”
At the time Marshall spoke, mere months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, U.S. forces had sustained a string of painful setbacks and had yet to win a major battle. Eventual victory over Japan and Germany seemed anything but assured. Yet Marshall was already looking beyond the immediate challenges to define what that victory, when ultimately— and, in his view, inevitably—achieved, was going to signify.
This second world war of the twentieth century, Marshall understood, was going to be immense and immensely destructive. But if vast in scope, it would be limited in duration. The sun would set; the war would end. Today no such expectation exists. Marshall’s successors have come to view armed conflict as an open-ended proposition. The alarming turn i

Gospel Reflections: Rejoice, the Bridegroom is Here

Friday after Ash Wednesday
Matthew 9:14-15
Then the disciples of John approached him and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast [much], but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to recognize you as the bridegroom, who woos my heart and invites me to a deeper union with you. Grant that I may rejoice at your presence in my life.
Encountering Christ:
  1. Recognizing the Bridegroom: This passage is not so much about rules of fasting as it is about recognizing who Jesus is. Jesus is the bridegroom. In the Old Testament, God made a covenant with his people. The covenant, more than a mutual agreement, was a spousal-like commitment between God and his people that culminated with Jesus’s loving self-gift on the Cross. Salvation history is a love story between God and us. Hosea revealed God’s intention. “I will betroth you to me forever: I will betroth you to me with justice and with judgment, with loyalty and with compassion; I will betroth you to me with fidelity, and you shall know the Lord. I will say to Not-My-People, ‘You are my people,’ and he will say, ‘My God!’” (Hosea 2:21-22, 25). The loving union God desires with me is possible only in and through Jesus Christ, the bridegroom.
  1. Rejoicing in the Presence of the Bridegroom: The Incarnation, the hypostatic union of human and divine nature in the very person of the Son of God, is reason to rejoice.  Elizabeth rejoiced and John the Baptist leapt for joy at the approach of Jesus in the womb of Mary. The angels rejoiced at the birth of Jesus. My heart rejoices that my bridegroom is present to me through the sacraments, in nature, in my loving relationships with others, when two or more are gathered in his name, and each morning in my daily prayer. How blessed I am to be the bride of Christ, the beloved daughter of the Father, a soul called to union with the triune God.
  2. Anticipation of the Bridegroom’s Final Coming: While the bridegroom has already come, we are told to anticipate his final coming. Jesus warns us of the danger of not having our lamps lit and ready. He invites us to have a vigilant spirit (Matthew 25:1-13). Vigilance is a disposition we foster daily, not out of fear for the end of the world, but in anticipation of a consummating union of the bridegroom with the bride. Until Jesus comes again, we unite ourselves to the Bridegroom in a privileged way in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.  It is the kiss of heaven and earth, the meeting place of our human misery with the divine gift of the Son of God. He comes as the bridegroom to unite himself to us in his precious Body, Blood, soul, and divinity.
Conversing with Christ: Come Lord Jesus! Come as the bridegroom of my soul. Grant that I may be vigilant, watching for your presence in my daily life, especially in the Eucharist.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will be attentive to how I can rejoice at your coming through the grace you offer me.

Bishop Barron's Gospel Reflection February 27, 2020

Thursday, February 27, 2020
Thursday after Ash Wednesday
LUKE 9:22-25
Friends, in today’s Gospel, the Lord lays out the conditions for discipleship. He makes this demand: “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

Notice that this is not simply a question of accepting suffering that happens to befall one. This is not simply a Stoic resignation.

Jesus is telling us actively to take up our crosses, to seek them out, to carry them as he willingly carried his. What Jesus did on the cross was to bear the burden of the world’s sin. He bore others’ burdens in love. And this is what we must do: actively, proactively seeking out ways to lighten other people’s loads.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer commented that when the Lord summons a person to discipleship, he calls him to come and die. When the blind Bartimaeus received his sight, at the midpoint of the Gospel of Mark, he followed Jesus up the road that would lead to Calvary. The way of the Christian life begins and ends with the man who is God dying on a cross.

Reflect: In what ways can you go out of your way this Lent to choose one person in your life and lighten his or her load?

Thursday after Ash Wednesday
Lectionary: 220

Reading 1 Dt 30:15-20

Moses said to the people:
“Today I have set before you
life and prosperity, death and doom.
If you obey the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin on you today,
loving him, and walking in his ways,
and keeping his commandments, statutes and decrees,
you will live and grow numerous,
and the LORD, your God,
will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy.
If, however, you turn away your hearts and will not listen,
but are led astray and adore and serve other gods,
I tell you now that you will certainly perish;
you will not have a long life
on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and occupy.
I call heaven and earth today to witness against you:
I have set before you life and death,
the blessing and the curse.
Choose life, then,
that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God,
heeding his voice, and holding fast to him.
For that will mean life for you,
a long life for you to live on the land that the LORD swore
he would give to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Gospel Lk 9:22-25

Jesus said to his disciples:
“The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected
by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.”
Then he said to all,
“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world
yet lose or forfeit himself?”

Gospel Reflections One Day at a Time

Thursday after Ash Wednesday
Luke 9:22-25
He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?”
Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant me what I need to be your disciple TODAY.
Encountering Christ:
  1. Daily: When Luke gives an account of Jesus’s condition for discipleship he adds the word daily. It reveals Luke’s conviction that discipleship requires daily struggle. Luke the evangelist was not a first generation Christian. He came to know Jesus through the teachings and preachings of eyewitnesses. He also lived in the time of great expectation of the Parousia, yet he seemed more concerned with following Jesus whole-heartedly every day. As Saint Paul’s companion, Luke experienced the daily crosses of discipleship first hand. While he didn’t live with Jesus or hear Jesus’s words in person, he nonetheless heard Jesus speak those words to his heart every day that he intentionally chose to be Jesus’s disciple. Jesus speaks those same words to our heart whenever we avail ourselves to read the Scriptures.
  1. Today Is Sufficient: We are quick to count the costs of discipleship, fearing what is to come. But Jesus reminds us not to be anxious about tomorrow (Matthew 6). He speaks of trusting in Providence for material goods, but God provides the spiritual we need for each day as well. We should not say, “Jesus please don’t ask me to carry a heavy cross tomorrow,” but rather, “Jesus, give me the strength to carry this one cross today.” A disciple is called upon to live in the present moment with faith, trust, and love. Jesus gives us all that we need to invest in today’s task of discipleship. Let’s invest it! Spend it today for Christ, and do not save it for tomorrow, for tomorrow may not come.
  1. True Profit: What if all of our accumulated possessions were sent away but we were left behind? Would we lose our grounding? Our identity? Our meaning and purpose?  Jesus asks us to examine our attachments. “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?” He reminds us that real profit is in possessing eternal life through his salvific grace and our acceptance, daily, of that gift. When we keep our eyes on what we are made for (relationship with God) we find that the strength and the mercy of God helps us through any daily cross that needs to be carried.
Conversing with Christ: Jesus, help me to carry my cross today.  Help me to remember who I am and what I was created for. Help me to focus on the gift you give me daily to persevere in loving you and, through you, those in my life.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will resolve to take up my cross and follow you TODAY.

How boulders in Mongolian mountains reveal the pace of climate change - Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists: Where most see large, unimpressive rocks, glacial geologists Aaron Putnam and Peter Strand see clues about whether the transition from cold to warm climates around 18,000 to 20,000 years ago—that is, the transition from the last ice age to a climate similar to the present day—occurred simultaneously across hemispheres. It appears they warmed together. The samples they’ve already studied from trips around the world—including this trip to the remote Altai Mountains in Mongolia—also hint that the shift occurred at a much faster rate than many previously suspected, a finding that has obvious implication's for today's human-made climate change.

RIAC :: Why Should Putin Help Trump?

RIAC :: Why Should Putin Help Trump?: With the US election campaign gaining speed, political opponents of the incumbent President are getting back to their old mantras of Vladimir Putin standing by his old friend and partner — if not his puppet—Donald Trump. This belief remains one of the very few issues on which there appears to be a strong consensus among such different people as Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, Charles Schumer, and even Bernie Sanders. All of them seem to be convinced that Trump is “Putin’s best friend” in Washington and therefore, the Kremlin will be supporting Trump’s reelection in 2020 with the same vigor and with the same disrespect of the US sovereignty, as it allegedly supported his presidential race back in 2016.

The outcome of the 2020 Presidential election in the United States will affect not only America but the rest of the world as well, including Europe, China, the Middle East, and so on. Russia is no exception. Nevertheless, for Russia, this election in relative terms will mean less than for many other international players.

Unfortunately, the US-Russian relationship will remain adversarial no matter who gets to the White House in 2021. At this juncture, the best we can d

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg Fanfiction

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg Fanfiction: Thirty-eight-year-old presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg would be winning the election if the election was held on Archive of Our Own, an open-source platform of slightly highbrow user-submitted fanworks from a variety of fandoms. On Archive of Our Own, Buttigieg and husband Chasten Glezman are the stars of user-submitted fanfiction or, more specifically, RPF—real person fiction—which has been popular in fannish circles for decades. In these nearly 70 stories, Buttigieg and Glezman’s relationship is the focus. Some of the RPFs are sincere and sweet, while others are House of Cards rip-offs, with Buttigieg advisor Lis Smith delivering Aaron Sorkin-paced dialogue. And then, of course, are the explicit RPFs, which fantasizes about the intimate details of Buttigieg and Glezman’s relationship. AO3's chaotic, free-for-all tagging system with phrases like “it was supposed to be smut but then I killed someone” and “i swear this isn’t straight angst, (it’s gay angst) it’s clear to see why Buttigieg, of all the politicians running for president right now, would become fannish fodder. It’s parasocial relationships with politicians arriving at its most obvious endpoint.
