New post on Interrupting the Silence
Thanksgiving for Everythingby Michael K. Marsh |
Psalm 92:1. "It is a good thing to give thanks to the LORD,
and to sing praises to your Name, O Most High."
and to sing praises to your Name, O Most High."
When
I was a child, I always received a box of blank thank you notes as a
Christmas gift. I didn’t have to finish writing all my notes on
Christmas Day, but I did have to begin. It was a good thing to do—to
acknowledge what I had seen and received.
What
if we went through our days giving thanks? People, relationships,
opportunities, failures, successes, sins, challenges, joys, losses,
nature, cooking, doing laundry, running errands, paying bills,
illnesses, the car pools, work, and a thousand other ordinary
things—each pointing to a reason for thanksgiving.
If
we saw everything as the basis for offering thanks, we might learn to
see with new eyes. We might recognize that we live only by the merciful
sufficiency of God. We might remember or discover all that we have and
all that we are. We might awaken to the ever-presence and the
ever-goodness of God.
“If the only prayer you say in your whole life is, ‘Thank you,’ it would suffice.”
