Netanyahu, Israel Losing International Status with Gaza Onslaught
Ten days before Israeli forces launched a ground offensive into Gaza on July 17, a senior adviser to the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces lamented that a “big war” in Gaza was becoming inevitable—even though almost every sane Israeli strategic analyst agreed that such an action would ultimately be a “lose-lose” proposition for Israel. While Israel, in principle, possesses the military might to destroy Hamas in Gaza, such an all-out campaign is not likely to occur. Already, the European Union has expressed its anger at Israel’s continuing occupation and the virtual blockade of Gaza, which is causing a perpetual humanitarian nightmare. And the Israelis fear an international backlash that would be worse than the one that followed the 2008-2009 “Operation Cast Lead” that killed nearly 1,500 Palestinians in Gaza, the majority of them civilians. http://mebriefing.com/?p=901
