Syria

Media fatigue and news from Iraq, Ukraine and Gaza have driven Syria off the headlines, but after more than three years the civil war is no nearer a solution (we commented earlier that the Lebanon civil war lasted 15 years). Following an election generally regarded as meaningless president Bashar al-Asad was sworn in for a third term; he appeared in public for the first time at Eid prayers on 29 July. Releasing a further €50 million humanitarian aid the European Commission referred in a statement to a conflict that has cost 170,000 lives and displaced half the population of 23 million, "the world's largest humanitarian crisis". According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights over 2,300 people were killed during Ramadan.
