Makes one wonder how we would view a foreign country, say Syria,
explicitly waiving restrictions on arms transfers to groups actively
seeking the overthrow of the U.S. government. Does might now make right
to the extent that the constraints of the notion that one should not do
to others what they do to one are entirely suspended? It seems very
unlikely that anyone in our political system will see anything at all
unusual about the president's decision to allow the arming of terrorists
in Syria for various purposes. Covert action of this sort used to be
regarded as sufficiently questionable to have to be kept plausibly
deniable. It seems worth speculating where the precedent set by this
sort of transparent violation of national sovereignty is likely to take
us and the world.

Obama waives ban on arming terrorists to allow aid to Syrian oppositionBy JOEL GEHRKE | SEPTEMBER 17, 2013
President
Obama waived a provision of federal law designed to prevent the supply
of arms to terrorist groups to clear the way for the U.S. to provide
military assistance to "vetted" opposition groups fighting Syrian
dictator Bashar Assad.
