please do what you can to help keep Senators off the "backdoor to war" bill

Ordinarily, I don't express an opinion, but on this particular
legislation I fear that the American public will be snookered
into war once again.

If you have any relationships with Senate offices, please do what you
can to keep them off the "backdoor to war" bill. Time is of the
essence. AIPAC will be swarming the Hill on Tuesday. Once people get
on these things, it's very hard to get them off. But if people are
warned ahead of time - particularly Senate Democrats who may be
cautious once they realize that the bill is an attack on the policy of
the Obama Administration - they may slow down.

If you have a relationship with an office that says that they feel
that they absolutely must "support Israel" by signing on to the bill,
ask them to say that they are willing to sign the bill if section 1-5
and section 1-8 are removed.

1-5 "reiterates" that US policy "is to prevent Iran from acquiring a
nuclear weapon *capability* and to take such action as may be
necessary to implement this policy." As you all know, current US
policy is to prevent Iran from acquiring a *nuclear weapon*.

1-8 endorses an Israeli attack on Iran, by saying that if Israel
attacks Iran, the US should support Israel militarily and
diplomatically. As you know, current US policy is to try to distance
itself from any Israeli attack.

If you have a relationship with an office that is already on the bill,
ask them to get off; failing that, ask them to press for sections 1-5
and 1-8 to be removed.

Thanks for any help you can provide. Needless to say, people who write
about these things should do so.

Here is the current list of cosponsors. Note that two of the nine
remaining Senators who voted against the Iraq war are on this list:
Boxer and Wyden. The other seven remaining Senators who voted against
the Iraq war, who are not yet on the "backdoor to war" bill, are:
Richard Durbin (D-IL), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Carl Levin, Barbara
Mikulski (D-MD), Patty Murray (D-WA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Debbie
Stabenow (D-MI). Anything you can do to help keep these seven off the
bill would be especially useful.
