CNN Town Hall Green Party Jill Stein & Ajamu Baraka

The Town Hall with Dr. Stein and Mr. Baraka is eminently worth pondering. Dr. Stein makes an impression of moral seriousness Mr. Baraka seems to have come right out of the mid nineteen sixties. He thinks Senator Sanders insufficiently aware of what he refers to as “contradictions” and one of these, if I have followed him correctly, is that it is wrong to seek redistribution and social justice within the US without considering a vast scale of global injustice. Seeking to gather votes from, let us say, unemployed workers in western Pennsylvania by reminding them of their obligations to the globally impoverished does not strike me as likely to be electorally rewarding even if not devoid of an authentic historical pathos. Chris Cuomo as interlocutor remarked that Mr. Baraka had served in the US armed forces and was the only person amongst the various candidates to have done so. Many will recall the Reverend Mr. Wright of Chicago, whose rhetoric has often been cited as evidence for President Obama’s alleged failings. The Reverend Wright as a younger man did two tours of duty as a Naval Corpsman with the Marines in Vietnam. Despite Mr. Baraka’s patriotic credentials, it is difficult to think that he was an obvious candidate for a place on the Green ticket. My friends amongst the German Greens are hoping that Dr, Stein does not replicate the Nader performance of 2000, Enough said…..Norman Birnbaum
