MERS Update 6/9

MERS

Virus Spreading, But Not Mutating
As South Korea’s MERS outbreak climbed to nearly 100 cases, and 7 people have died, scientists are on the job to figure out what is fueling its spread.

The Korea National Institute of Health and the Chinese Center for Disease and Control and Prevention independently sequenced viruses taken from 2 MERS patients in South Korea. The WHO concluded that neither group found mutations making the virus more dangerous.

That points to other factors, such as the delayed response to the outbreak and poor hospital infection control, as virologists told Science magazine (http://news.sciencemag.org/asiapacific/2015/06/did-poor-ventilation-lead-mers-superspread-korea) late last week.
