Will Moscow’s Syrian Effort Succeed?

Russian diplomacy is trying its luck at finding a political settlement to the Syrian crisis, but the pitfalls are both complex and manifold and require careful consideration. Russia has invited 28 Syrian opposition figures to Moscow for talks later this month, in preparation for a dialogue with the regime. The invited figures include the head of the Washington-anointed Syrian National Coalition, Hadi al-Bahra, as well as two former Coalition chiefs, Moaz al-Khatib and Abdel Basset Sida. The list also includes members of the domestic opposition located inside Syria, including Hassan Abdel Aazim, Aref Dailia, and Fateh Jamous. Qadri Jamil, a former Deputy Prime Minister, who was sacked in 2013 and who has good ties with Russia, was also invited.
