Global Health Ebola Update 1/27

EBOLA

Liberia Down to 5 Cases
Just 5 confirmed cases are being treated in the entire country, according to Tolbert Nyenswah, the country’s Assistant Minister of Health who heads the country’s Ebola response—but he warned that just 1 missed case could seed a new cluster.

At the height of the outbreak, said Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the country was the “poster child of disaster;” 3,636 Liberians lost their lives to the disease, according to the WHO.

In another sign that Ebola’s grip over the region is loosening, Senegal reopened its land border with Guinea yesterday.

Oxfam: Marshal a New Marshall Plan
Financial help on the scale of post-World War II’s Marshall Plan for European recovery is needed to get West Africa back on its feet after the Ebola crisis, said Oxfam GB chief executive Mark Goldring.

3 key areas of need include cash for families affected by Ebola, investment in jobs, and infusion of support for health, education and sanitation services.

"The world cannot walk away now that, thankfully, cases of this deadly disease are dropping … The world was late in waking up to the Ebola crisis, there can be no excuses for not helping to put these economies and lives back together," says Goldring.
