Death of King Abdullah bin Abd al-Aziz
King Abdullah's death was announced early yesterday 23 January. He had
been King of Saudi Arabia since 2005 but in effective control ten years
before that because of the ill-health of his half-brother the late King
Fahd. He will be remembered as a king who continued in the tradition of
his father King Abd al-Aziz, known to the world as Ibn Saud, seeking to
give Saudi Arabia the benefits of the modern world by evolutionary
reform without fundamental or sudden change.
