On Memorial Day

weekly prayer request
On Memorial Day
Memorial Day in the United States arose as a response to the Civil War. From its inception it was a memorial for those who died in battle on both sides of that long and tragic conflict.
Jesus' challenge to love our enemies and do good to those who harm us carries the deepest truth that in God all battles are ended, all conflicts resolved — even death and defeat yield to life and victory.
Our solidarity with the poor has the clear and practical goal of material assistance but it also has the noble reality that we are incomplete without the strengths and weaknesses, the poverty and wealth, of each and of all.

Please pray
Loving God, on this Memorial Day when for many summer begins, let us remember that for others winter sets in. This truth reminds us that there is no rising without dying; that we could not see the stars without the night sky; that love, joy and hope are realities linked with their opposites. Help us this day to embrace all of life in this one world. Amen.

Blessings,
