China has played a considerably different role in the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign than in previous campaigns. Where U.S. politicians used to proclaim "the Chinese don't share our values," they now say "they're beating us." As David Firestein of the EastWest Institute writes, China is being invoked as a proxy for all that is ostensibly wrong with the United States.
