China Exports Strengthen on U.S. Demand
Export Growth Below Some Economists' Expectations

uptick in exports represents a rebound from the first quarter’s 3%
contraction. That suggests that, while the export cycle may not be
recovering to its post-crisis pace, it is at least perhaps no longer
slowing down. Two of Asia’s electronics exporting powerhouses, South
Korea and Taiwan, have reported a similar trend. South Korea’s exports
grew 3% in the second quarter, up from 2% in the first three months of
the year. Taiwan’s also expanded 3%, up from just 1% in the first
quarter.

copper imports dropped to the lowest since April last year as demand
for the metal as collateral to obtain credit eased amid a probe at
Qingdao Port. Inbound shipments of unwrought copper and copper products
fell to 350,000 tons in June, a 7.9 percent decline from the previous
month, according to data released by customs today.
