Jesus withdraws with purpose Following the death of John the Baptist, Jesus withdraws to a quiet place—not out of fear, but because his public ministry is not yet complete. His mission of forming the apostles and proclaiming the Kingdom must continue before his Passion. The greatest public miracle of Jesus' ministry The feeding of the 5,000 is the largest public miracle recorded before the Passion, demonstrating both Jesus' divine compassion and his power to provide abundantly for God's people. Jesus as the New Elijah Just as Elijah miraculously multiplied loaves to feed one hundred people, Jesus performs an even greater miracle by feeding five thousand with only five loaves. The miracle reveals that Jesus is greater than Israel's greatest prophet. Jesus as the New Moses The multiplication of the loaves recalls God's gift of manna in the wilderness during the Exodus. Jesus fulfills Israel's expectation of a New Moses who would lead a new Exodus and provide heavenly bread for God's people. The miracle points directly to the Eucharist Matthew intentionally parallels the feeding of the 5,000 with the Last Supper. Jesus takes, blesses, breaks, and gives the bread using the very same language later used to institute the Eucharist. The symbolism of the five loaves and twelve baskets The five loaves represent the five books of the Torah, while the twelve baskets symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel.
