Dear Michelel T,
As the summer winds down and a new school year begins, parents are
helping their children get back into routines. For children who live in
Mwandi, a very remote part of Zambia, school routines look very
different.
For the children whose families can afford the school fees, preparing
for a school day starts as early as 4 am. Before they go to school,
these children walk a long way - often more than five miles - over
difficult terrain to the nearest water source to get water for their
day.
If children don't make this trip, then they won't have the water
they need to stay clean, hydrated, and alert during the school day. They
have to be careful to avoid dangers like wild animals and human
predators who may prey on the vulnerable on their way to the water
source.
