Akamai Technologies Panel and Network Operations Tour

Over the next two years, HBS Association of Boston (HBSAB) will be hosting the "Emerging Technologies Reshaping Our Future" event series, focused on cutting edge technologies and their impact on business and everyday life. Special thanks to Bill Ho and Biscom Inc. for sponsoring the series.
Our inaugural event will highlight the fact that we are in the midst of a technological revolution of the Internet, and not just our laptops, tablets, and smartphones. This revolution is being driven by our refrigerators, door locks, cars, medical devices, our glasses, and even our clothing.

Approximately 20 Billion (not a typo) devices of all sorts will be connected by 2020, a long way from when a graduate student wired up a toaster to the Internet (and gave it a Twitter account) way back in 2008.

We will learn how a combination of technologies are driving huge changes in robotics, augmented and virtual reality, computational algorithms, Internet of Things and much more. Importantly, we will hear from experts about how these changes are disrupting business models and creating new opportunities in manufacturing, healthcare, finance and education. We will also explore cybersecurity concerns and the broader implications when all these devices are connected to each other. Do we need to fear retaliation from our toaster or coffee maker?

Kick off 2019 with one of the year’s best events hosted by Akamai Technologies at its Kendall Square headquarters celebrating its 20th year. We will get a rare opportunity to visit a 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC) that controls 20 percent of the world’s internet traffic (please do not touch that red button, sir). This event will have limited capacity so be sure to sign up early to avoid being shut out.

Moderated by Dr. John Carrier, Chief Strategist of Akamai Technologies, esteemed panelists include:
• Keith Gargulio, Vice President of Customer Experience - Industrial IOT, AR, and
Digitization Advisor,
PTC
• Dr. Abel Sanchez, Executive Director, MIT Geospatial Data Center

Dr. John F. Carrier is Chief Strategist for Akamai Technologies. He is also a Senior Lecturer in the System Dynamics Group at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has spent over 25 years diagnosing and eliminating hidden factories in the oil and gas, petrochemical, discrete manufacturing, and research laboratory facilities, saving these organizations hundreds of millions of dollars while reducing operating risk. He also works with companies to successfully integrate the technology of the Industrial Internet of Things into their existing organization, with a distinct focus on developing front line leaders in the culture of improvement.

He currently runs a popular MIT Executive Education course on Implementing IIoT through Continuous Improvement Leadership (https://tinyurl.com/yafmbdqe). He also co-teaches an MBA course with Professor John DC Little (Little’s Law). Dr. Carrier holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, an ScD in Control Systems from MIT, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Keith Gargiulo has been with PTC for 23 years. In his current role as Vice President of Customer Experience - Industrial IOT, AR, and Digitization Advisor, Keith is responsible for helping customers realize value from PTC’s Thingworx (IoT) Platform, supporting end-to-end solutions for the full product lifecycle. Keith is also a FIRST mentor, promoting STEAM to the next generation of engineers and problem solvers. Keith holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer and Virginia Tech.

Dr. Abel Sanchez holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is the Executive Director of MIT's Geospatial Data Center, architect of "The Internet of Things" global network, and architect of data analytics platforms for SAP, Ford, Johnson & Johnson, Accenture, Shell, Exxon Mobil, and Altria. In cyber security, Dr. Sanchez architected impact analysis of large-scale cyber attacks designing Cyber Ranges for the Department of Defense (DOD). In password security, Dr. Sanchez led the design of a password firewall (negative authentication) for the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) agency. In machine learning, addressing fraud detection, Dr. Sanchez designed a situational awareness framework that exploits different perspectives of the same data and assigns risk scores to entities for Accenture. He led the design of a global data infrastructure simulator, modeling follow-the-sun engineering, to evaluate the impact of competing architectures on the performance, availability and reliability of the system for Ford Motor Company. He has been involved in developing E-Educational software for Microsoft via their I- Campus Program and with establishing the Accenture Technology Academy, an online resource for over 200,000 employees. He has 10 years of experience with learning management systems and has made deployments in America, Asia, and Europe.
