One
cannot but notice that, at yet another point of decision about
increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan, there is not a single word in
this report about why U.S. direct participation in a war in Afghanistan
-- after nearly 16 years of war -- is in the interest of the American
people. Obviously that is because there is no compelling argument that
such an interest exists that would pass the laugh test.
Quite
apart from the narrow national interest of t United States, there are
numerous reasons why the United States should cease to be militarily
involved in propping up the Afghan government, having to do with its
warlord origins and character. Cordesman has no metrics related to that
problm, of course.
