Obama’s Camp David Agenda: GCC Public Support for Iran Deal at a Steep Cost
The number one agenda item when
President Obama meets with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) leaders in
Washington and Camp David later this month is to ensure that there will
be public support for a final P5+1 deal with Iran. And Obama is
prepared to pay a high price for this support.
While the Administration is
well-aware of GCC concerns about the pending final nuclear deal with
Iran, the President needs to convince the Gulf Arab leaders to maintain a
public posture of support for the negotiations, without which opponents
in the US Congress and elsewhere will have a further cause for trying
to block an agreement, if it is reached by the June 30 deadline. One
Washington official candidly admitted that it would be a disaster for
Obama if the GCC countries take a public stand against the deal, as
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did, in an address before a
joint session of the US Congress in early March.http://mebriefing.com/?p=1665&utm_source=MEB+VOL+-+II_+Issue+75+Subscribers+Campaign+of+May+02+2015&utm_campaign=VOL+II+-+Issue+75&utm_medium=email
