Sweltering Heat Kills 800 in India
With temperatures soaring to 50º Celsius (122º Fahrenheit), hot enough to melt roads in New Delhi, at least 800 have died in India—and there is no sign of a respite in the coming days.
The authorities placed hospitals on alert for heatstroke victims, asked NGOs to open up drinking water camps, and warned people to stay indoors—but that isn’t an easy option for some of the country’s poorest people, including the homeless and street vendors.
Hundreds of people, mainly from the poorest sections of society, die at the height of summer every year across India.
