GLOBAL HEALTH EBOLA UPDATE 2/7

EBOLA

Tools of the Trade
Even basic tools like stethoscopes present a challenge for the doctors and nurses caring for Ebola patients.

Health workers cannot breach their PPE to allow the instrument to touch their skin, and nothing that touches an infected person is allowed out of Ebola wards—so stethoscopes have typically not been part of the toolbox. Expensive electronic stethoscopes have been used in American hospitals treating Ebola patients, but at $500 it’s a stretch for West African hospitals. Instead, doctors have come up with some pretty clever workarounds, described in fascinating detail here.
