Stand Up for Life This Weekend!
If you are you looking for a way to stand up for life during this week of the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, take someone with you to see the film, Gimme Shelter, which opens January 24th as a limited release. (Depending on how well it does this opening weekend, the film could roll out to many more theaters in upcoming weeks.) Based on the true stories of several homeless teenagers, the film focuses on Apple Bailey, who at sixteen years old finds the courage to leave her addicted, abusive mother, but ends up on the street pregnant and homeless.
Gimme Shelter is not meant to make us comfortable. The film demands a lot of its audience with its realism, using extreme close-ups, intense emotional scenes, and unrelenting honesty. The convincing, often understated performances of Vanessa Hudgens, Brendan Fraser, and James Earl Jones draw us right in to Apple’s story. While the film is powerful and even heavy at times, it’s appropriate for younger teens who are mature enough to appreciate the story. And it offers an inspiring glimpse of the founder of Several Sources Shelters, Kathy DiFiore.
If you couldn’t make it to the March for Life, take a stand for life and support a film that honors the dignity of all human life.
