Crowds of tens of thousands in Cairo’s Tahrir square erupted in feverish celebration as Mohamed Morsi of Egypt’s long-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood defied pundits, opinion polls and the former regime’s entrenched networks to become the nation’s first democratically elected president.
