Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States by Michael Lind

Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States
by Michael Lind

The New America Foundation's Economic Growth Program is pleased to announce the publication of Land of Promise:  An Economic History of the United States, by Michael Lind. In this groundbreaking new study of how America rose to wealth and power, Lind, a co-founder of the New America Foundation and policy director of the Economic Growth Program, argues that periods of rapid technological advancement have repeatedly changed the fundamental nature of the American economy, but necessary institutions and policies take decades to adapt and respond.

Lind argues that the current political debate over whether the government should be involved in the economy is misguided: the founders understood the importance of a governmental role in the economy, but disagreed as to what it should seek to achieve. Tracing the arc of the American economy through the ongoing struggle between the competing visions of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, Lind shows how successive generations of Americans have reinvented the American republic--and have it in their power to do so again.

RECENT PRAISE FOR LAND OF PROMISE:

Publishers Weekly: "An imaginative account of the 200-year tug-of-war between Alexander Hamilton's and Thomas Jefferson's economic philosophies."

History Book Club: "Michael Lind, in this challenging and provocative book, makes a potent contribution to that vital debate."

Library Journal: "It would be difficult to find a book with more fascinating biographical details, statistical vignettes, and obscure but truly engaging, eye-opening details of U.S. economic history."

Kirkus: "Timely, big-picture analysis that supplies vital context to our current economic and political moment."
