The United States Central Intelligence Agency's plan to step up its efforts against al-Qaeda in Pakistan and Afghanistan went disastrously wrong when an Afghan National Army officer, planted by an elite al-Qaeda unit, was invited into a CIA base, where he blew up himself and seven agents.
