The origin of COVID-19: Evidence piles up, but the jury’s still out - Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists: Circumstantial evidence is piling up on how the pandemic began. On one side of the debate over whether COVID-19 has a natural origin or whether it could have spawned from a laboratory accident, researchers point to evidence such as discoveries of viruses in nature that are very similar to SARS-CoV-2. On the other side, leaked documents and Freedom of Information Act requests regarding bat research in China and the United States have fueled suspicions that a lab played a role in the initial outbreak.
