To Our Readers:
Today marks my first day as Editor
in Chief of The Wall Street Journal. It's both exciting and humbling to
assume such an important assignment, a job I liken to running a public
trust. It's an honor to succeed my friend and longtime boss, Gerard
Baker, who will take on a new role as Editor at Large after five and a
half years.
I've never really wanted to work anyplace but The Journal. On the day I
started here more than 24 years ago, the Dow Jones Industrial Average
closed at 3,620.42. As a reporter and editor, I worked closely with
hundreds of colleagues and four editors in chief. I covered beats from
banking and food manufacturing to management and General Electric Co.,
and held senior roles including national editor, foreign editor and
deputy editor in chief.
I know the important place The Journal occupies in our public life, and
understand the high expectations of our readers. Our focus on business,
markets and economics offers a unique lens on the world. We strive every
day to fulfill our mission of uncovering and exploring the powerful
forces and trends that shape our economy, politics, lives and careers,
and touch everything from the products we buy to the food we eat.
As you know, we've changed with the times. These days we cover topics
such as sports, fashion, food and the future. In the fast-changing world
of 2018, we work hard to produce a complete, top-flight version of The
Journal on mobile and digital platforms, even as we enhance the print
newspaper we have published for nearly 129 years. We have an expanding
menu of live events, such as our global CEO Council and tech conferences
and our recent Future of Everything Festival in New York.
But some things can't and shouldn't change. We remain as committed as
ever to journalism that is factual, thorough, insightful and unbiased.
Our careful reporting and rigorous editorial standards set us apart in
our industry, and are the reason we continue to be trusted by readers to
a unique degree. Journalism is a human enterprise, of course, and
occasionally we fall short. But in every case you can be sure that the
entire staff of The Journal is striving to set the highest possible
standards in our industry. My primary responsibility as editor is
ensuring that every day we earn-and deserve-the trust we receive from
our readers.
The team at The Wall Street Journal is deeply grateful to all of you for
your support for what we do. It's an exciting and important era in our
history, and our strong team of journalists is fully deployed to pursue
deep, exclusive stories that illuminate our world. It is a privilege for
me to work with them, and to serve all of you.
Today and always, I invite you to write me at m.murray@wsj.com
Sincerely,
