As crowds thronged in Cairo last month, Egyptian Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced that the military had deposed Mohamed Morsi, the country’s democratically elected president.
There are many reasons why the generals gave the controversial Morsi the boot—his poor governance, their fear of the Muslim Brotherhood, not to mention the sheer number of anti-Morsi protesters in the streets. Yet a retired American general who once oversaw all U.S. military aid to Egypt says there was yet another major incentive for al-Sisi and company to topple the Islamist government: cold, hard cash.
