There is no American journalist who can match Nir Rosen for his on-the-ground tell-it-like-it-is reporting from the Arab world. This is his most recent snapshot of the complex situation in Syria, which was published by AlJazeera. (It is said that the NYT has declined to publish his reporting from Syria, where he has spent most of the past several months, because it conflicts with the established narrative of a brutal regime oppressing innocent democratic protesters. Whether or not that is so, Rosen conveys a story that does not fit the prevailing one.) This is the first of two pieces. The second is to be published soon.
