On Careerism and Strategy: They Are Not Unrelated

Col. G.I. Wilson (USMC, ret.) and Col. Chet Richards (USAF, ret.) address these two key issues in The Pentagon Labyrinth: 10 Short Essays to Help You Through It.

Both also spoke (separately) to Federal News Radio (1500 AM in the Washington area) about these important, all too closely related issues.

Col. Wilson addresses careerism as perhaps the most destructive behavior now so common in America's national security community: putting self before ethics and accountable action.  Find and replay his interview, and how Col. Wilson describes careerism in today's military and civilian ranks at all bureaucratic levels, at http://federalnewsradio.com/?sid=2308994&nid=150.  You can also find his essay in the book at http://pogoarchives.org/labyrinth/05-gi-wilson-w-covers.pdf

Col. Richards addresses the question of strategy: What is it? How can you build an effective one? And, how can you distinguish agendas and plans bound to fail from a competent strategy?  Listening to this interview in the context of Col. Wilson's might give you an appreciation for how we so often find ourselves in fixes we didn't comprehend when we took the first step -- for reasons of careerism.  Find Col. Richards' interview at http://www.federalnewsradio.com/?sid=2310812&nid=150.  Find his essay at http://pogoarchives.org/labyrinth/06-richards-w-covers.pdf.

These two interviews are a part of a series by the Dorobek Insider Show at Federal News Radio.  All of the authors of The Pentagon Labyrinth are being contacted for this series.  Find the interviews that have been done so far at http://www.federalnewsradio.com/?sid=&nid=454.  (As shown on March 21, that link does not include an important part of the series, Chris Dorobek's interview with Chuck Spinney at http://www.federalnewsradio.com/?sid=2307834&nid=150.)
