The corruption game
Washington's knowledge of corruption and repressive behavior among its allies in the Greater Middle East has had no effect on American policy. This is a potential disaster as long as the United States continues to repeat the worst of Cold War mistakes, especially by creating a modernized version of the "domino theory" in which - as once with communism, now with al-Qaeda - irrational fear that any small setback for the US in the Muslim world could lead straight to an Islamic caliphate. - Juan Cole (Jan 26, '11)
