Iran has finalized a US$7 billion gas pipeline deal that commits the Islamic republic to supplying Pakistan with natural gas from 2014. The government in Islamabad needs the fuel to counter the South Asian country's desperate energy shortage to the extent that it is prepared to defy US pressure to walk away from the project. - Syed Fazl-e-Haider
