Reactor price tag is too high for most utilities, chief regulator says
The cost of construction is the biggest challenge facing utilities who want to build nuclear reactors, according to Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The price tag for a new reactor is about $10 billion, Jaczko said, and "very few utilities have the capability or market capitalization equivalent to that kind of cost." The statement came as President Barack Obama asked Congress to provide the nuclear industry with $36 billion in loan guarantees, which would lower the cost for new reactors.
