Fr. Bob's Reflection for the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Fr. Bob's Reflection for the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Some time ago, a magazine ran a story about a teenager who belongs to the Santa Clara swimming club. Every morning she gets up at 5:30 a.m. to hurry to an outdoor pool for two solid hours of swimming, after which, she goes to school. After school, she returns to the pool to swim for two more hours. At 5 p.m., she hurries home to do homework. She goes to bed exhausted and waits for the alarm to ring at 5 a.m. to start it all over again. When asked why she follows such a disciplined schedule, she said, “My goal is to make the Olympic team. I will give up going to parties; I will give up staying up late. Anything for an Olympic gold medal.” Had Jesus lived now rather than in A.D.30, today’s Gospel might have been very different. Rather than talk about a pearl merchant who sacrificed all to buy a dream pearl, or a farmer who sold all to buy a field with treasure in it, Jesus might have talked about a Santa Clara swimmer, who sacrificed all to make the Olympic team. Why do I say this? What connection is there between a pearl merchant, a treasure seeker and a Santa Clara swimmer? What do these three people have in common? The one thing they have in common is their total commitment to a dream. All three are willing to sacrifice everything for a goal they have set for themselves. This leads us to the point Jesus wishes to make for us in today’s Gospel: Citizenship in God’s Kingdom involves total commitment on our part. We cannot pursue it as we do a part-time job. It cannot just be a hobby. Being a Christian is like being a pearl merchant, a treasure seeker or a Santa Clara swimmer. It involves total dedication and commitment. But, there is one big difference between a Christian and the other three. St. Paul refers to it in a letter to the Corinthians. Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last. But, Christians do it for one that will last forever. You see, the pearl merchant’s prize, the farmer’s treasure and the swimmer’s medal are all perishable. At the moment of death, there is only one thing that counts. The only thing that will matter is what we have become in the process of trying to seek the pearl, acquire the treasure or win the medal. What has the pursuit of these things done to us? How have they affected our daily life? Ultimately, whatever is yours, save for sin, is God’s gift to you, even if it stems from your own fantastic talent. That talent itself owes its origin to God. But, a gift of God is not given to be clutched, it is given to be given. Each of you is a gifted person. Gifted in more ways, perhaps, than your modesty will admit. What Jesus tells us time and time again is use your gifts as He invites or commands you to use them. To some, He may say, “Give all you have to the poor and come follow me.” To others, He says, “Share what you possess, use it for those around you, employ your power for peace.” Today’s Gospel makes an important point: Nothing in the world may take priority over God’s Kingdom and our pursuit of it. Today’s Gospel tells us that what counts when we die is not what we have acquired in life. But, what we have become. Did we learn to love one another? Did we learn to forgive one another? Did we learn to help the needy? Did we learn to encourage the fainthearted? Did we learn to become more committed and loyal to God and to one another? One thing I can promise you is that rarely in your life will you experience such profound joy as when, because of you, a smile is born on a crucified face. And you realize that all people, no matter what they have done or who they are in God’s eyes, they are all pearls of great price. Remember your most precious possession is yourself, give it away lavishly. Yours in Christ, Fr. Robert Warren, S.A. Spiritual Director

The trouble with telling history as it happens - Responsible Statecraft

The trouble with telling history as it happens - Responsible Statecraft New on RS today, Geoff Roberts highlights the problem with historians trying to tell the story of the Ukraine war as it unfolds and with unapologetic biases. "Plokhy has no privileged access to sources or material evidence. Like all outside observers of these ongoing events, he must rely on information emerging from a very murky pool fed into by media reports, unsourced anonymous intelligence briefings, uninterrogated witness statements, participants’ post hoc memoirs, internet sources and an incessant stream of propaganda claims."

The Forever War’s Forever Legacy - TomDispatch.com

The Forever War’s Forever Legacy - TomDispatch.com Karen Greenberg, Guantánamo 21 Years Later August 1, 2023 For more than 18 years, Karen Greenberg has been writing about the crimes the U.S. committed at its offshore prison of injustice at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. It would be, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld assured Americans, "the least worst place" (a phrase Greenberg turned into the title of her book on the subject). Sorry, Don, but that was only true if you were comparing it to the "black sites" the CIA was already running then. From the moment it was set up in 2002, with the Global War on Terror just months old and the first (often already tortured prisoners) sent there, bound, hooded, and in fluorescent orange jumpsuits to be brutally mistreated beyond the shores of American justice, that prison has been a horror beyond compare. And as Greenberg showed in those years, the rest of us could have known just what was happening. Here's just one Guantánamo quote from the time: “On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food or water. Most times they had urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18, 24 hours or more.” That was, in fact, typical of descriptions outraged FBI agents assigned to Gitmo in 2004 sent in memos or emails to their bosses back on the mainland. They confirmed prisoner claims that “military personnel beat and kicked them while they had hoods on their heads and tight shackles on their legs, left them in freezing temperatures and stifling heat, subjected them to repeated, prolonged rectal exams and paraded them naked around the prison as military police snapped pictures,” and so it went. From that prison's very first day, when the initial 20 prisoners were flown in and, about a week later, the first publicity -- if you dare call it that! -- photo taken of them was released, as New York Times reporter Carol Rosenberg recalled, it looked "like torture." (The full set of photos, available years later, proved to be a first-class horror show.) Today, TomDispatch regular Greenberg, who has visited that prison and covered its horrors for endless years, considers the latest reports on the all-American nightmare that's simply never ended. Tom

An intriguing but frustrating window into Obama’s West Asia policy | Just World News

An intriguing but frustrating window into Obama’s West Asia policy | Just World News Now comes (yet another!) book by one of the hordes of nation-security technocrats who dominate West Asian policymaking in Democratic administrations here in Washington. In this case, it is Grand Delusion: The Rise and Fall of American Ambition in the Middle East, a recent book by Steven Simon, a guy who has worked as first a career civil servant and then a political appointee in U.S. administrations going back to Pres. Ronald Reagan, and who between government stints has transited through DC’s ever whirling revolving door into presumably lucrative positions in all the “usual” kinds of militaristic think-tanks. Don’t yawn yet, though. Unlike most of his counterparts in the nat-sec punditocracy who have written memoirs of their times in office, Simon at least started to reflect on “what went wrong” with U.S. policy towards West Asia (the “Middle East.”) And in the chapter on the Obama administration—in which he served as senior NSC director for the Middle East and North Africa—he reveals a number of jaw-dropping details that help to explain the in-bred, reflexively pro-military and pro-Israeli atmosphere of not just the explicitly political class in DC but also wide swathes of the supposedly “policy intellectual” class of DC think-tank-dom.
