Dear Michelel T,
Cars set on fire. Roads blocked. The
international airport shut down. This is the scene on the streets
of Port-au-Prince, Haiti right now.
As you might have heard, after months of economic and political turmoil, Haiti is in crisis. The greatest contributing factor? An extreme fuel shortage.
The people who are suffering the most are women and children
living in places like Côtes-de-Fer. Our hospital there, the Bishop
Joseph Sullivan Center for Health, is already feeling the harmful
effects of this gas crisis. The hospital relies on gas to keep the
lights on. So with no gas, that means there is no power for operating
rooms, medical equipment, or ambulances to transport patients.
Without gas, pregnant women who need
emergency C-sections could lose their life or their newborn. Children
needing life-saving surgery may not make it. Babies who need oxygen will not be able to breathe.
