CLIMATE CHANGE Pushing 100 Million More Into Poverty

CLIMATE CHANGE

Pushing 100 Million More Into Poverty
Climate change could push 100 million more people into poverty by 2030 without more ambitious mitigation efforts, according to a new World Bank report.

That’s on top of 900 million expected to be living in extreme poverty if the pace of development doesn’t pick up.

Climate change is already hurting the poor through decreased crop yields, floods washing away assets and livelihoods, and a bigger threat of diseases like malaria, says John Roome, World Bank senior director for climate change. He advises an integrated strategy to combat poverty and climate change. Specifically, the report calls for better social safety nets and health coverage for all, flood defenses, early warning systems and hardier crops.
