Mideast myopia
The United States continues to invest too much in the region

Much
has been made of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy “pivot to
Asia,” which implies a pivot away from the Middle East, which has not
happened. There was a time when America’s energy needs forced us to pay a
lot of attention to the Middle East. Much of the oil and natural gas
that made U.S. industries run came from Saudi Arabia, thus obliging
America to pay close attention to what happened there. We were forced
to be concerned that nothing interrupt our fuel imports.
That
is no longer the case. America’s oil and gas comes increasingly from
the United States itself, or from Canada and Mexico, or from other
petroleum-producing countries in South America, Europe or Africa. http://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/2016/05/18/Mideast-myopia/stories/201605140028
