African CDC

DISEASE SURVEILLANCE

African CDC, Please
The African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (African CDC) will launch later this year, with an African Surveillance and Response Unit focused on an emergency operations center and deployment capacity.

Top US and African Union officials signed an agreement in Washington yesterday formalizing collaboration between the new center and the US CDC.

While West Africa’s Ebola crisis made the need for an African CDC plain, stirrings for its creation trace back to an AU special summit on HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Abuja, Nigeria, in July 2013.

Interesting slice of history: The US CDC was created 70 years ago to respond to a malaria epidemic, US Secretary of State John Kerry said in remarks surrounding yesterday’s signing.
