Tony Judt was English, born a Jew, and was an early Zionist—even working for the IDF while in Israel. He was a preeminent historian, and a legendary public intellectual during the years he taught at NYU, publishing frequently in the NYRB. This piece is from 2006, but has only grown in pertinence since then.
