Ebola 10/7

EBOLA

Firestone Runs Over Ebola
When an employee of the Firestone rubber plantation in Harbel, Liberia fell ill with Ebola, a hospital could not be found to take her.

The company stepped up in an extraordinary way: It created its own Ebola treatment ward. Its management, with no prior experience with Ebola, read up and flew into high gear with a full-fledged response—including isolation, quarantine of immediate contacts, and procurement of supplies—that successfully contained the virus in the plantation’s community of 80,000. The 3 patients it is still treating are from neighboring communities.

The CDC praised the effort, which shows how the resources of a well-funded corporation have been able to succeed where under-funded West African governments have failed.
