Protests against Morsi turn violent
Protests against sweeping powers that the Egyptian president awarded himself turned violent on Friday as Mohamed Morsi’s supporters staged rival rallies, underlining the deepening divisions in Egyptian society following last year’s uprising.
Opponents of the controversial decree that places Mohamed Morsi outside judicial oversight clashed with the president’s supporters in several cities and set fire to several of party offices in several cities, AP cited Egyptian state television as reporting.
The violence was not widespread and did not reach Cairo where opponents, massing in Tahrir Square – the epicentre of last year’s revolution – staged separate rallies from supporters in different parts of the capital city.
Mr Morsi’s new powers, which were pitched as introduced to protect the transition to constitutional democracy, have provoked outrage among his opponents who fear he is embarking on a power grab and are accusing him of launching a new dictatorship.
