IAEA Board to Weigh Western Case Against Iran

IAEA Board to Weigh Western Case Against Iran

The International Atomic Energy Agency's 35-nation governing board is set this week to consider a fresh bid by Western powers to pressure Iran after the publication of new IAEA findings on the Middle Eastern nation's atomic activities, Agence France-Presse reported.
Still, it remained uncertain if any stern board measure against Iran would receive backing from China or Russia Such an action might again refer Tehran to the U.N. Security Council for possible punitive action, according to AFP. The United States and several European nations suspect Iran's nuclear program is geared toward development of a nuclear-weapon capability; Tehran insists its atomic ambitions are purely peaceful.
"Iran has done anything but comply with its obligations," a high-level Western government staffer said in advance of the board session that began on Monday. "The board needs to speak very clearly and in a unified way."
"We certainly believe a resolution is necessary," said the insider in Vienna, Austria. "The belt is tightening around Iran and we hope that they will take heed."
