NASA probe lands on Mars

Nasa probe lands on Mars
Some black and white photographs of dusty rear wheels on the surface of Mars confirmed on Monday that the $2.5bn Curiosity rover survived what the US space agency Nasa had described in advance as “seven minutes of terror” and landed safely.

The car-sized rover – much the largest scientific laboratory sent to the red planet – carried out an extraordinarily complex series of robotic manoeuvres involving parachutes, retrorockets and a “sky crane” that finally lowered Curiosity on to the surface of Mars’s Gale Crater at less than one metre per second.

When the first pictures arrived back at mission headquarters at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, prolonged cheering and whooping broke out among the blue-shirted scientists and engineers.
