Scientists struggle to predict tsunami path With a magnitude of 8.9, according to the British and US geological surveys, the offshore quake is the biggest since the magnitude 9.1 event off the coast of Indonesia that triggered the devastating Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 – and Japan’s biggest quake in recorded history.
