White smokes rises into the air in the badly damaged town of Yamada. Japan's recent massive earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded, appears to have moved the island by about eight feet (2.4 meters), the US Geological Survey said.

I think it possible that not only has Japan shifted westward towards the subduction zone due to the release of the friction which caused the earthquake and in doing so shifting the Earth's rotational axis a bit, but also that the release of pressure and relaxation of plate tension below that area will likely cause some of the region to subside (settle) and partially lose some of it's elevation above sea level.
